Superstitions

Throwing salt over your shoulder, not walking under a ladder, opening an umbrella inside avoiding a black cat and so on and so on; I have always thought superstitions were silly and ridiculous things until I recently discovered I have a superstition. I have to hug the person that is dropping me off at the airport, or if I am dropping someone off I give them a parting hug. The last time I flew Sara dropped me off at the airport and I gave her a hug. Afterwards while waiting for my plane I realized that I always hug the person who is flying or the person dropping me off. As quickly as I realized I do this the thought flashed through my head “Well what if that is the last time I see them?”

This is where the superstition comes into the equation. I have never been dropped off or dropped someone off who is not planning on returning. So why would I think they might never return. Logically the chances of them dying or not returning are almost none, so it is an ill logical response to the act of flying. Logically Sara has a greater chance of dying on the road than she does in an airplane crash but I don’t hug her before she leaves work everyday.

  • I always put my right sock on first. If I don't I might die. I don't know because for as far back as I remember I've never tried putting my left sock on first.

Hugging people before you get on the plane is much more sensible, but I wonder how much of has been put in our subconscious via films and the like. For example, I happen to think that smoking looks cool, and if I ever meet a man with scissors for hands I'll trust him unconditionally.

  • I still never step on a crack for fear of breaking my mother's back :P

I agree, hugging someone is a much more sensible superstition, besides, everybody appreciates a good hug.

  • Funny that you should post this today. (or whenever it was - I didn't really look at the date, I just assumed.)

ANYWAY, I was on the job site again today and it was either walk around this huge dirt pile for the 100th time or just cut under the ladder. I don't consider myself superstitious, but as I walked under it, I wondered if I would regret it.

When I was building full time, I always walked under ladders, scoffing at superstition, then I thought about when my life got real shitty and it was all after the that time.

    SEE?? I think I need a hug!

  • PS. The belly button is healing nicely. I've been anal with cleaning it though. Today is 7 days post piercing and still no infection.

ACK! Weren't we just talking about superstition. Forget I said anything!

  • Genius, if I have to have a superstition at least it is a reasonable one.

Naive, I would hug you if I could. Thank you for the belly button update, keep me posted.

  • Whether you're superstitious or not, hugging is always a good habit ... unless it's an icky person who you don't like, then definitely, no hug, even at the airport!

  • Theresa, I even hug hop-hop who I just that type of person. It is a superstition, it does not make any sense!
