I need a book

I have been in a reading funk lately. I have not really found a new hidden gem in the pages of a book. So I have taken to reading and sometimes rereading literary classics, in hopes that they are classics for a reason. However I am still disappointed, I am not saying that the books have been mislabeled as classics but they are just not what I am looking for. I finished The Awakening by Kate Chopin recently and while reading the book for the first time in my life I thought briefly about suicide. I felt trapped and helpless; like I was on a runaway train, speeding out of control on an already laid track with no ability to change the situation. It was the foreshadowing of Edna’s suicide that I was feeling while reading and it was powerful but it still left me wanting when I finished the book.

I am now rereading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I first read this book as a child in middle school; I loved the book at the time. I can’t recall if it was from my initially reading of the book or references after it but I had morphed the part about Boo Radley into so sort of nightmare with a villain, where Boo is the villain. Given that I just started the book yesterday that might still be true but right now I just feel very sorry for Boo. I am enjoying To Kill a Mockingbird but it is still not what I am searching for, I want a book that grabs me and entertains me. I want a book that takes me away to a place full of mystery, adventure, love and happy endings. I don’t want a book that changes the way I think, attempts to educated me or gives me an alarming insight to the human condition through a simple story. Right now I can’t take a poorly wrote book either, is there a book out there that meets my needs? I am on a quest, any suggestions?

  • I recently read The Kindness of Strangers by Katrina Kittle and loved it. It certainly isn't "classic" material, but it definitely has a plot line that grabs the reader... even if it has more than slightly tragic. Good luck!

  • I usually read for pure escapism so I wouldn't read anything I can't get into by the end of the first page. That might mean I have poor taste but oh well. I like Bev Marshall's books, especially Right As Rain. And I read anything by Greg Iles. I just finished a book called Me and Emma by Elizabeth Flock that I enjoyed alot. Best Firends by Martha Moody was pretty good. And Whistling in the Dark by Lesley Kagen was and ok read.
I need to go to a bookstore, my pile of books has dwindled to one unread book.

  • I know you love Pride and Prejudice--there's a trilogy by Pamela Aiden that's really good. It's P&P from Darcy's p.o.v. and she introduces several new characters and fleshes out some old ones. The first and third books are easily recognizable as she reworks a lot of scenes that are in P&P.

The second is pure gothic mystery. Everyone I've talked to has either loved it or hated it. I actually enjoyed it, but I got a kick out of her take on the gothic genre. The third book is probably my favorite owing to the required happy ending and an added storyline I found interesting.

It certainly isn't classic literature, but she treats Austen's work with integrity-the new characters, and two in particular, are quite engaging. It was good enough that I immediately reread P&P when I was finished and felt that she'd complemented the story rather than taken away from it.

Hope you find something you like.

  • I thought of another one my daughter and I both read and liked recently. In fact my daughter loved it so much she won't give me my copy back. It's The Myth of You and Me by Leah Stewart.

  • I wish I could help you... haven't had the time to read in years.

But I'd check out what sheets said... he know what he's talking about, especially when it comes to writing and reading! :)

  • Without knowing more about what kinds of books you like, it's a little hard to make recommendations. Yet I unswervingly plough forward!

I don't know if you enjoy vampire books, but if you do, I highly recommend Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. The protagonists are engaging, the love story is beautifully told, and Meyer has a unique twist on some of the vampire mythology. This book was so good that I swallowed it whole, managing to read it in one afternoon while I was at work and, I have to confess, getting quite annoyed when people brought me work.

There is a dystopian fantasy series by Scott Westerfeld that I also recommend very highly. It's well written, the characters are engaging and compelling, and the protagonist is someone I can see liking in real life. They're YA, but don't let that deter you. Uglies, Pretties, and Specials.

Again in the fantasy genre, and also YA (but don't let it stop you) I'd recommend the Magic or Madness trilogy by Justine Larbalestier.

Briar Rose by Jane Yolen is a breathtakingly beautiful read. It has its moments of pain, as the protagonist traces her grandmother's whereabouts during WW II, but it's an incredible story.

The Dogs of Babel--it's a hard one, but it's so beautifully poignant.

Another fantasy series I'd recommend is the Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony. I'm not a huge Xanth fan, but these books are altogether different and they're just outstanding.

    Good reading!!

  • Amanda,
I can't do tragic endings right now.

    Genius,
I am right there with you on the whole escapsim thing. I will add your books to my list though I have not heard of a single one.

    Izzybella,
This is the second time I have heard you talk about this book so I am finally going to break down and get it. I have a long plane ride in the near future.

    Sheets,
I have and I am blushing here but it too much porn for my reading tastes.

    Faith,
I am a fantasy junkie so thanks.
